Dufferin OPP Warn of Pricey Phone Scam – Returning a Call could be Costly

Dufferin County OPP have put out an alert warning of an expensive phone scam that could hit you hard in the wallet if you fall for it.

The scam has been around for years, but OPP in Dufferin County say it’s worth a reminder.

OPP say a woman calls your phone and leaves a message saying something like: “Sorry I missed you. Get back to us quickly. I have something important to tell you.”

There are a number of variations but the call will give a phone number with one of 3 area codes, 284 (British Virgin Islands), 876 (Jamaica), or 809 (Dominican Republic).

When you return the call, police say you usually get a long-winded recording, while you are being charged by the minute.

OPP in Dufferin found that if you call the 809 exchange you get charged at a rate of $2425 a minute.
